Each style of multimeter has its purpose, but digital is more convenient for most applications. Technically, there is no right answer for the "best multimeters" question.

Troubleshooting 101 / Re: Delta or Y Voltage Test

Well, go back to basics and I think you can test for Y or Delta voltage fairly easily using a multimeter.

In the Y configuration, sources and loads always have line voltage higher than the phase voltage, and line current will always equal the phase current.

Using a multimeter, check for AC voltage between any two of the three phase lines and note your findings (240V,480V, etc) Now make the same voltage test from any one line to ground or the neutral conductor if you have one. If the voltage is considerably lower than your initial test, then it is a Y configuration. it's that simple.

Well said...

Tach generators can take plenty of abuse, but sooner or later they become the source of your shop floor woes. They can be tested with an analog voltmeter and a cordless drill in a quiet area of your shop.

The test is simple, the faster the drill turns, the higher the output voltage. It should also be fairly stable voltage.

You'll see the undervoltage alarm appear many times when an external 24V power supply or external 120V source is missing due to a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Motor overtemp is usually referring to a temp sensor that is incorporated into the motor itself.

Some examples of motor overtemp protection are:

  • Temperature Switches
  • Thermocouples
  • RTD's Resistance Temperature Detectors
  • Thermistors

I agree that a current limit alarm can be caused just a s much by an external force as it can be drive problems. Also the motor plays a huge role here since a shorted or partially shorted winding can also be the source of a current limit alarm.
#25
I would also say a runaway flywheel is a good example of a cause for a speed feedback alarm, also broken cabling leading to your feedback device, or simply a failed feedback device, but keep in mind you'll see just as many broken cables as you will failed encoders, tachos, etc.
#26
When you see contactor feedback, you can usually associate it with welded contacts. That's the way i look at it.
#27
Over current alarms can almost always be cleared if you take a step back and look at the entire application.
#28
Typically a heatsink alarm is symbolic of overloading problems in one way or another. Whether the drive is overloaded because of degraded internal components or something external is causing the drive to work too hard.

What is an Overspeed Alarm as pertaining to a motion control system? I'm looking for tips on real world troubleshooting of overspeed alarms or faults. Thank You!

Wow, 3rdshiftguy. That is great. These are the types of responses I'm looking for. The technical side and the maintenance side on how to address these things in a factory setting. Thanks again! Travis
