Who Has FREE PLC Software?

I know Allen Bradley RSLOGIX is far from free, and their support program is far from free so I am looking for advice on PLC selection. I am going to add several small PLC's to some equipment in our shop so I am considering other PLC manufacturers.

Mainly I have decided to base my decision on the price of PLC software. I made the following list with names that I am familiar, but if you have any other brands of PLC's with free software, please enlighten me.

  • Allen Bradley (not free)
  • GE / Fanuc
  • Mitsubishi
  • Omron
  • Schneider Modicon
  • Siemens

Nothing is free, it seems like free PLC software is usually coupled with cheap hardware that is prone to failure. Allen Bradley at least offers reliability.

Allen Bradley is of in the business of making money. They operate under the guise of being an electronics supplier but I have my doubts! Free Allen Bradley software might change my mind but i don't see that happening any time soon.

You'll never see free PLC software from Allen Bradley because that's not their business model. They charge for the initial software license and then they charge annual support contracts to keep the money flowing in. I don't see them changing this.

Doesn't mcmaster offer Free PLC Software when you buy there PLC's? I'm forgetting which brand they push, but I seem to remember the "buy a PLC and get the software with it" package. I could be wrong, they may have changed it since I looked last.

In another thread here, a member was looking for a way to activate RSlogix for free. Free RSlogix would be nice, I think AB would still sell PLC's because of the quality, but in reality that PLC software package isn't free.

Check Mcmaster Carr, they offer small basic PLC's with software included for free but these are very limited in capability.

Over at Automation Direct you can get "CLICK" PLC Programming Software which is used with Koyo CLICK PLC's.

Automation Direct also has DirectSOFT 100 Free, it has a 100 word limit though, so it's not going to get you very far.

Also at Automation Direct you can get "Do-More" Programming Software that goes with the associated PLC's.

Usually if you download free PLC software, they end up selling you a PLC to go with it so they get your money one way or another.

I was surprised to find a few free PLC software packages when I looked around. Here's what I found:

Siemens - Siemens offers a free version of their STEP 7 TIA Portal software, which is used for programming Siemens PLCs. The free version, called TIA Portal Basic, allows users to develop and test programs for small to medium-sized applications.

Rockwell Automation - Rockwell Automation offers a free version of their Studio 5000 Logix Designer software, which is used for programming Allen-Bradley PLCs. The free version, called Studio 5000 Logix Designer Lite, allows users to create, configure, and program small to medium-sized control systems.

Mitsubishi Electric - Mitsubishi Electric offers a free version of their GX Works3 software, which is used for programming Mitsubishi PLCs. The free version, called GX Works3 MELSOFT Start-up Navigation, allows users to create and simulate simple programs.

Omron - Omron offers a free version of their CX-One software, which is used for programming Omron PLCs. The free version, called CX-One Lite, allows users to develop and test programs for small to medium-sized applications.

WAGO - WAGO offers a free version of their e!COCKPIT software, which is used for programming WAGO PLCs. The free version, called e!COCKPIT Demo Version, allows users to create and test simple programs.

It is important to note that while these software versions are free, they may have limitations in terms of functionality or application size. Additionally, some companies may require users to register for access to the software.
