Advantage of incremental encoder versus absolute encoder

Is there an advantage to using an incremental encoder versus an absolute encoder? I understand the difference between the two but I am having a hard time understanding why anyone would choose an absolute encoder when an incremental could be engineered into most applications.

The choice of absolute encoders or incremental encoders is made when an engineer begins their project. I think it is based on the application. I'm not seeing an advantage either way, just a different way of monitoring position.

So as for an advantage of incremental versus absolute encoder, that's a grey area...
